Moldy ceilings at The Glen Apartments (Photo: Kirsten Gutierrez/WWAY)

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A possible hazardous situation. One Wilmington woman says she has been living in an apartment with mold for months.

Wanda Campbell lives in The Glen Apartments and says she has asked for help several times and management has yet to step in to help.

Campbell says she has been dealing with mold and water leaking from the bathroom ceiling for eight months.

“It’s very frustrating because like I said I come home from work and I’m sleep. And I don’t hear the rain, if it’s raining. Then I wake up and my feet are getting wet, my socks are getting wet, my shoes are getting wet,” Campbell said.

It all started with a crack in her bathroom ceiling, and now there are two holes that leak water when it rains. Campbell’s daughter Angela is in town visiting and cannot believe her mom has lived in these conditions for so long.

“This is my mother we’re talking about. I don’t know how you feel about yours, but I don’t play about my mother. You know what I’m saying. I’m not going to leave here knowing that she’s living in these conditions,” Angela said.

Both Wanda and Angela have reported the issues to management multiple times.

“Why is this like this. Like why can’t I use the bathroom without getting rained on,” Angela said.

Each time they have complained they say they have been rudely brushed off. Campbell says she is tired of living like this.

“You know I’ve had problems this whole winter with you know not being able to breathe clearly,” Campbell said.

Not only does she say it is causing her health issues, she has also slipped on the wet floor injuring her hip.

“I think it’s really a disgrace. That you know I had to wait 8 months for someone to come and notice,” Campbell said.

The Glen Apartments management had no comment on the matter.

“I’m ready to leave. I don’t want to stay here,” Campbell said.

Campbell plans to move out as soon as she can.

WWAY checked with Wilmington’s Rapid Mold Removal and they confirmed there is in fact mold on the ceiling. WWAY also reached out to Phillips Management Group, the owner of The Glen Apartments, we have not received a response.

It’s unfortunate but Wilmington seems to have an epidemic of bad landlords. I just recently had to get a restraining order against mine after suffering through intimidation, threats, and harassment when I tried to get my landlord to fix the leaking roof of the house I live in and get rid of the rodents that were in the walls, but I’ve come to discover that I’m just one of many with similar stories. The worst part is that there doesn’t seem to much by way of legal recourse for the victims of these bad landlords. I called every city, state, and county office I could and nobody seemed interested or able to help me. Thankfully I’ll be escaping my nightmare within the week but I know there are other people out there who might not be so lucky!!!

I had issues with the same management company. They own pinewood, but I was in there constantly talked with a Lawyer and everything finally they got me into another apartment. It was about 2 months though before it was settled. Now I haven’t had any problems since. Maybe go up there and tell them your talking with a Lawyer.

my question is why did she continue to live there when she obviously knew there was a health issue with the building, where do we get these people?

If a prospective tenant would refuse to rent or continue to rent when there was a known problem with the units them the landlords would have to fix the problems or get out of the rental business. It is really a very simple issue.
