Man accused of killing Monkey Junction woman still in hospital

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The man accused of bursting through a woman’s door, shooting her multiple times, then shooting himself in the face remains at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says William Bernicki is still under heavy sedation. His jaw is currently wired shut. He is expected to remain in the hospital at least 2-3 more weeks.

Once Bernicki is in better condition and conscious, he will be served with a warrant for first degree murder.

On April 25, Brittany Fullwood was shot and killed in her home on Woods Edge Road while her 3-year-old son was nearby.  Investigators have not said what the relationship was between Fullwood and Bernicki, but Fullwood’s father and friends say Bernicki was obsessed with Fullwood and would not leave her alone.
