CCSO seeks help identifying suspects in copper theft at Duke Energy site

RIEGELWOOD, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help identifying two people connected to a larceny and property damage investigation at a Duke Energy power transformer site in Riegelwood.
According to the sheriff’s office, it happened at a Duke Energy facility located at 1337 Cronly Drive. Investigators say a lock on the facility’s gate was cut, allowing suspects to enter the secured area.
Deputies said ground wires were cut and removed from multiple transformers and utility poles on the property. The damage is estimated at approximately $5,000 and includes the cost of repairs, replacement components, labor, equipment and safety measures required to restore the site.
Security footage captured two people inside the fenced facility. One person was seen wearing a hat, white shirt and blue jean shorts while carrying what appeared to be bolt cutters. The second person was wearing a gray shirt, khaki shorts and black shoes and appeared to have red hair.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who recognizes the individuals or has information about the case to come forward.
