The hot weather and lack of rain is beginning to take a toll across the Cape Fear region. Saturday lightning in Pender County caused a fire in the Holly Shelter Game Land. Today the North Carolina Forest Service Fire Team worked to contain the flames.

It was then that Wilmington photographer Amy McConnell grabbed her camera and hit the road to her hometown to capture the devastation. McConnell says she found one thing still standing amongst the rubble: the American flag.
