4/19 UPDATE: Vincent Marchese is home today recovering from his bout with a pit bull Friday. His family says they will file a Dangerous Dog Report against the pit bill and his owner.

##############

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A 13-year-old on his way to the school bus was attacked by a pit bull Friday morning. The attack occurred around 7:30 on Angel Island Road in the Monterrey Heights neighborhood of New Hanover County.

Vincent Marchese says the pit bull jumped the fence and chased after him, biting him in the leg. Marchese had surgery on his leg at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He says he'd be scared to walk by the home again if the dog was in the yard.

"They should put it to sleep," said Marchese, "or at least do something with it so it doesn't hurt anybody else."

Neighbors say they've seen children taunt the dog before, but they could not say whether or not Marchese was involved. Marchese says he never bothered the dog.

New Hanover County Animal Control says there are no prior reports of the dog running loose, but the pit bull will be confined for 10 days, which is a standard practice for all bite incidents.

pitbull attack

Sure hope the owner is charged and fined. This is terrible. The boy looks like a big kid luckily. If it was a small child they would be killed.

TO ALL THAT WITNESSED, AND WHAT FINE FOLKS YOU ALL MUST BE

TO ALL YOU FINE PEOPLE THAT CRAWLED OUT TO SAY YOU "WITNESSED" THIS INCIDENT, AND ALSO TO CONSOLE AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE OWNERS OF THIS VICIOUS ANIMAL THAT DESTROYED MY CHILDS LEG,{SEE THE PHOTOS, THEY SAY IT ALL}...FIRST TO THE WITNESSES",,HOW MANY OF YOU FINE PEOPLE CALLED 911 WHEN YOU SAW A CHILDS LEG BEING SHREDDED TO THE BONE? HOW MANY OF YOU FINE PEOPLE WENT TO THE STREET TO HELP A CHILD BEING ATTACK BY A VICIOUS ANIMAL,SURELY IF YOU WITNESSED ALL THIS, YOU MUST OF HEARD HIM SCREAMING AND BEGGING AND PLEADING FOR HELP..ANSWER...NONE OF YOU FINE CITIZENS DID ANYTHING,,,OH BUT LETS NOT FORGET THAT SEVERAL OF YOU DID CONSOLE AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE OWNERS OF THAT THING THEY CALL " A FAMILY PET", WHILE THEY LAUGHED AND CHUCKELED AND WALKED AROUND THE FRONT LAWN LIKE THEY WERE NIEGHBORHOOD HEREO'S., SO WHAT MAKES ANYONE CAPABLE OF TURNING THEIR BACK ON A CHILD THAT COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN KILLED DURING THIS ANY BETTER THAN THE ANIMAL THAT IS LOCKED AWAY AT ANIMAL CONTROL???? HOPEFULLY, WHAT EVER GOD THAT YOU "FINE PEOPLE" PRAY TO WILL UNDERSTAND AND FORGIVE YOU...BUT I DOUBT ANY OF YOU CAN BE 100% SURE OF THAT....

Okay, so your son was indeed

Okay, so your son was indeed a victim of a brutal attack. And yes they have been witnessed tormenting that dog. Running up to the fence and kicking at it, shaking the fence to aggrevate it. Look, I'm sorry your kid got bit, but if he was playing with fire......he deserved to get burnt. It's also pretty bad when WWAY hides the whole story to benefit the "VICTIM". Why didn't they report that you and your family have been threatening the owner and family members with bodily harm, or threatening the dog if it comes home. Say it isn't so and I'll post your family members Facebook comments. ALL of them !!!!!!!!!!

SCARYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Hey I'm Vincents aunt and why are you signing in without a name. I can tell you I never threatened anyone but I did state some facts and I will again.Thats right so you take your threat and shove it up your wazooooooooo.Get a set and quit hiding you coward.

So Auntie, "state the

So Auntie, "state the facts". Take your own advice, "get a set" and post here what you and your family have been posting elsewhere, and saying to whoever you can get to listen.

I think you should post the comments

If the victim's family is making threats, they not only deserve to be called out here on this blog, they need to be reported to the authorities.

Any sympathy I had for this kid has gone right out the window.

For the owners of the dog: For your safety and your dog's safety, I hope you are taking some serious measures to secure your property. Also, if I were you, I would be installing security cameras and recording every second of every day around my property.

CYA, folks.

It must be put down.

It must be put down. Allowing people to own these land sharks is intolerable. I hope Vincent recovers quickly and will be able to go to school without fear of meeting this dog again.

Children often taunt dogs that bark at them. They don't know better. It is not their fault for not knowing how to deal with vicious animals.

Dog attack

My son was attacked by a dog as well. I contacted animal control and the only thing that was done was the dog was kept away from people for ten days. The dog was allowed to stay at the owners home for the ten days. This was not the first time the dog had attack someone.
I was told, because the owners had the dog up to date on vaccines all was good. so basically all that could be done was done. Meanwhile, my child had to have a plastic surgeron put him back together. We had to pay all medical bills as well.
I think something needs to be done about the animal control in New Hanover county. Tougher restrictions dangerous animals.

Sincerely,

Mother of Victim

"Mother of Victim" -

"Mother of Victim" - seriously?

I am throwing the BS flag. Post the municipality where this "attack" occurred and post some pictures of you kid's wounds.

You are noting more than an inflammatory shill for the anti-dog crown.

Dog Attack.

.. and now the owners and coming forward, saying their were witnesses to the dog being aggitated and then attacking.

Where were these "witnesses" to help??!?!

The only person there to help was Vincent's friend Ryan. And poor Vinnie screamed for Ryan to stay back bc he didnt want him hurt.

Vincent had to walk all the way back home, with a fourth of his leg torn off, bleeding, screaming for help and none of these "witnesses" came to help.

And if this was an incident "waiting to happen", then why isnt the dog kept inside the house during the time kids are walking to school. This is a busstop for tiny children as well!!!

A tiny child wouldnt have survived this attack.

Not to mention... Originally the dog did lunge towards Vincents face and throat. If that chunk would have been taken out of his neck, then maybe the owners would do something!

With four tiny children in their home, how do they know one of their tiny kids wont aggitate the dog, and the same happens!

Pit Bull Should Be Put Down.

Vincent is my nephew and Pit Bulls are aggressive by nature.A trained animal will only attack on command.Social services should be called because there are 4 other young children in that house with another untrained pit bull.I hope there mortgage company and home owners insurance company are contacted too. There are regulations to owning these dogs and your homeowners insurance.

The biggest question is if people saw the child put a book bag down, harass the dog, then get attacked, then heard him screaming for help why did nobody act?He walked a block and a half home in serious condition with no help.

Vincent should be commended for telling another child to stay away and run because he was concerned the other child being smaller would be seriously hurt. That tells you what type of child Vincent is.The owners were on the news laughing and slandering Vincent, that tells you what type of people they are.And if anyone thinks any child no matter what deserves this you are sick demented individuals. Some people can not distinguish between the value of a human life versus the value of a dogs.

Sounds like Vincent is a 13

Sounds like Vincent is a 13 year old punk that teased a dog through a fence and got what he deserved.

To answer your question: People don't help kids that are getting what they deserve.

I agree that social services should be called. They should investigate Vincent's home life and find out which one of his parents is abusing him to the point that he has to take his aggression out on animals.

your the owner

Yes I do believe your the owner of the dog.You love the word "punk".You use it over and over.Social Services needs to make sure the childen living with the pit are safe. And not living with some criminal who is most likely involved in dog fighting.I'm sure Karma will be takin care of you,"PUNK".

what i want to happen

the dog needs to be put down if its able to take a bite almost 1/4 of my leg of it can easly kill a small child well there is preschools there every weekday if some thing isnt done something bad will happen its not so much that i am mad at the owners of the dog but that they wouldnt keep it caged or even get a bigger fence to keep it in so more kids dont get hurt the dog is known to be mean and it will always try to jump the fence i wasnt thinking it would be able to jump it that day because of after a entire school year of trying and never making it i had no problum walking pass it but then when i stopped to look at the new dog they got while not even being in the yard ryan my friend yelled "its jumping the fence" i started to run then when i found out i was to close to run i tryed to turn around and kick it and maybe knock it out or even stun it and get a chance to run but it turned and bite me than shaked its head easly not thinking but when dogs are trained to fight of course it will attack without thinking shaking its head it easly ripped of 1/4 of my leg i ran as fast as i could back home with the meat of my leg hanging of of my leg i want something to be done they should outlaw pitbulls in north carlolina there it to many storys about kids getting hurt so why wouldnt anyone do anything because nobody cares unless it happens to you there was no teasing the pitbull but thats just the thing about them they want to attack the frist time i walked to the bus stop it barked and tryed to attack me -Vincent Marchese

Honestly Vincent !?!?!?!?!?

I would like for all to remember everything that Vincent has stated in this blog. When a short period of time goes by and someone comes forth with a video of Vincent and gang, running the streets, causing mayhem and aggrevating the neighborhood. Please just remember what has been stated as "FACT". WWAY NEWS needs to quit controlling the info and state ALL of the "FACTS" !!!!!!

Vincent it is a terrible

Vincent it is a terrible thing that happened to you. Same to all the people that stood around and watched and did nothing.

But all Pit bulls are not bad dogs. My sister has two. They are the sweetest dogs and more well behaved than my yorkie. Everytime I go to my sisters they do come running up to me but not to bite me they just wanted to be loved on. I believe that the dog was only trying to get your attention to be loved on and when you kicked at him that provoked him and he was going to protect itself. I believe the same thing would have happened if it was a lab, retriever, etc.

People that have taken pit bulls and created them to fight and breeded them for that has given pit bulls a terrible complex.

As other posters have said there is three stories to every accident; yours, theirs, and the truth.

Vincent: Tips for you, buddy.

Here are some tips on preventing dog bites. I am sorry that your parents never took the time to teach you this. If they had, this could have been avoided.

Respect a dog's space. Keep your hands away from a dog's fence. A dog considers its yard personal property and may growl or bite to protect it.

Do not run away from the dog and do not yell or make loud noises.

Stand very still like a tree. Cross your arms over your chest, as if you are giving yourself a great, big hug. (This shape forms the trunk of your tree.) Look away from the dog. Dogs sometimes think direct eye contact is a challenge for power and control. You do not want to challenge the dog. You want the dog to go away.

Never approach an unfamiliar dog, especially one who's tied or confined behind a fence or in a car.

Be cautious around strange dogs. Always assume that a dog who doesn't know you may see you as an intruder or a threat.

What to do if you think a dog may attack

If you are approached by a dog who may attack you, follow these steps:

* Resist the impulse to scream and run away.
* Remain motionless, hands at your sides, and avoid eye contact with the dog.
* Once the dog loses interest in you, slowly back away until he is out of sight.
* If the dog does attack, "feed" him your jacket, purse, bicycle, or anything that you can put between yourself and the dog.
* If you fall or are knocked to the ground, curl into a ball with your hands over your ears and remain motionless. Try not to scream or roll around.

REMEMBER: You can't outrun the dog, not even an Olympic sprinter could.

Tip for Vincent

Be very proud of yourself.Know that your parents raised you to be the type of boy that put himself aside to save his friends from harm. You telling Ryan to run away before the dog let go of you and got to him because you were worried about how small he was and telling Austin to stay away tells the world how well you were raised and just wha type of person you are.

so which is it...

arms across the chest or down the side of your body ?

Vincent...

There are three sides to every story...yours, the dog owner's, and the truth. At this point, it's difficult to tell. I'm sure you're sticking to your story since it makes for better news coverage. But, if you did provoke the dog by shaking the fence, then shame on you. No, you didn't deserve what happened to you, but what were you thinking?

When you do return to school, ask your English teacher to spend some 1-on-1 time with you to review sentence structure, spelling, and grammar.

Unnecessary

While I agree that the truth in these situations tend to be somewhere in the middle, I think it is appalling and sad that you find it appropriate to bully an injured kid with your comment. Do you feel better about yourself because you criticized his grammer and called him a media hound? You say shame on him...I say SHAME ON YOU. By the way, I applaud the fact that Vincent formed an opinion based on his experience and wrote about it. Whether or not you agree with him, drawing a conclusion and expressing it is a vital learning experience that is to be respected, not judged or labeled as "media hungry."

Corey Anne...

Shame on me for expressing an opinion? While you may feel comfortable reading something that appears to be written by the likes of a 2nd grader, I am not. Especially when this kid is 13 years old and should have a better grasp of proper grammar and sentence structure.

Yes, the MSNM (main-stream news media) will almost always take the side of the "victim" when in fact, the "victim" may very well be the pit bull. I am in no way saying, or implying, that Vincent deserved the injuries he received. But, if he did antagonize the dog as others have said, there's an old saying that says "Play with fire you might get burned".

I think a better story here would be how Vincent has managed to get promoted each year without the ability to write a sentence using proper sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. Is this the caliber of education our children are receiving or just an isolated case?

My most humble apologies if I have offended you by writing what many others are saying to themselves is true.

Vincent...

Yes, Vincent, Taxpayer is correct on all points. But, please, most importantly, pay attention to the last paragraph written... it was physically painful to read your comment.
