LELAND, N.C. (WWAY) — The Town of Leland has released a police report detailing a deadly pedestrian crash that occurred last month in a grocery store parking lot.

The crash happened at 3:51 p.m. on May 28 at the Lowe’s Foods at 1152 East Cutlar Crossing. The victim was identified as 76-year-old Arleen Patricia Paul of nearby Brunswick Forest.

According to the report, a 36-year-old woman identified by the initials “MRA” was driving a 2019 Toyota Highlander when she began making a left turn in the parking lot. Police say she initially stopped after seeing Paul walking, but as she completed the turn, told investigators she did not see Paul due to a blind spot created by the vehicle’s A-pillar.

The SUV struck Paul at an estimated 7 miles per hour, causing about $2,000 in damage to the vehicle. Investigators noted no suspicion of drugs or alcohol in the crash.

Town officials say no charges have been filed at this time. The District Attorney’s Office is scheduled to meet with Leland police next week to review the case and determine whether charges are warranted.
