Searing weekend heat is being blamed for hastening the death of a McDowell County woman.
McDowell County Sheriff's Office Capt. Shanon Smith says emergency responders, a local medical examiner, and the 73-year-old woman's physician agree the heat could have contributed to the death of Peggy Sue Burleson.

The annual NC 4th of July Festival kicks off tomorrow in Southport with a slew of different activities, including a firefighter's competition. Though they won't be fighting any fire, they will be battling some extreme heat all afternoon.

The North Carolina Senate has approved a bill that ignores scientists' warnings of rising sea levels.
Senators approved the bill on a 34-to-11 vote Tuesday. The measure received little fanfare and no senators spoke in opposition to the measure.

The upgrade to the National Weather Service's Shallotte radar site was finished Thursday morning. The radar is now up and running again, meaning meteorologists will not have to rely on surrounding radars to monitor storms.
