ONLY ON 3: Leland Mayor Futch reneges on interview

Leland Mayor Walter Futch joins a growing list of politicians who apparently don't want to answer tough questions and then cancels interview appointments. Last night after the town council meeting, Futch agreed to come to the TV station today to do a live interview at 5:30 p.m.

Duke, Progress want limits on NC's merger hearings

video Week number five of the high school football season kicks off on Friday night. Half of our area teams will begin conference play on Friday. A few teams will have the night off. Some schools are still finishing out non-conference play.

Town of Leland settles with police officer shot in groin; Mayor says he is "out of touch"

video The Town of Leland agreed to settle with a Leland Police Officer who was shot in the groin multiple times with training ammunition during an exercise. But town leaders claimed to know little if anything about what happened. The town's insurance company will pay Sherry Lewis $18,750 and her attorney $6,250. Lewis also agrees to resign her position and neither party will admit fault or liability.

Local insurance agent arrested on alleged embezzlement charges

A local insurance agent has been arrested and charged with embezzlement. Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin says Earl E. Gay, 58, of Leland is charged with 14 counts of embezzlement by an insurance agent.

Swimming advisory issued at Caswell Beach

The advisory affects waters at the public beach access at Lighthouse Park off Caswell Beach Road in Caswell Beach, where test results indicate a running monthly geometric mean average of 41 enterococci per 100 milliliters of water, based on five samples taken within a 30-day period.
