A Wilmington eyesore is being cleaned up. Crews today began tearing down the old Almont Shipping Warehouse at Front and Nutt Streets.

Yesterday was the deadline for Monkey Junction residents and property owners near Southport to return annexation denial petitions. It's unofficial right now, but both communities returned more than 75 percent of the petitions. Only 60 percent were needed to block annexation.

Wilmington Police says William Samuel White, 60, of Wilmington was driving his 1955 Morgan convertible north on South 3rd Street from Carolina Beach Road when he crossed the center line and hit another car. The antique car does not have seat belts, and police say he died on impact.

The film "Blue Velvet" was made in Wilmington 25 years ago, and it helped put the Port City on the movie map.
The dark David Lynch drama was set throughout the city, and the part of lead mad man Frank Booth was perfect for Dennis Hopper. Now a cult classic, "Blue Velvet" is being honored with an exhibit of memorabilia and photographs from the production.
