The New Hanover County School Board has approved a middle school redistricting plan. It passed a revised version of option 2C was approved Thursday night. This puts an end to several months of debates, discussion and public forums. The school board was forced to redistrict because Holly Shelter Middle School is scheduled to open in August.

In a four to three vote Thursday night the New Hanover County School Board passed a redistricting plan that turns out to be a victory for supporters of neighborhood schools.

"I don’t feel like I cast the swing vote, but as chairman I did cast the tie-breaking vote," school board chair Ed Higgins said. "I was in favor of option 2C all along."

Taylor Jones has children who attend school in New Hanover County. He attended every redistricting forum the last 11 months. He supports the revised 2C option, but he says it’s not perfect.

"There are still some satellite districts within 2C," Jones said. "I wish they could have moved the satellites to make a true neighborhood school. It's unfortunate, but on the north end of town there will be some students who have to travel 13 miles to get to their school."

Board member Dorothy DeShields is disappointed with the redistricting outcome. She voted against the 2C plan along with board members Nick Rhodes and Elizabeth Redenbaugh. DeShields told WWAY NewsChannel3 that Williston, Virgo and the new Holly Shelter middle schools will have too many students on a free or reduced lunch plan with option 2C. She says it’ll be more than 60 percent at all three schools. She prefers a redistricting plan that would reflect more socio-economic diversity.

"It should have students from poor homes, median income homes and from rich homes and those children could feed on each other in a positive way," DeShields said. "When you separate you're almost segregating the schools."

Seriousl,get a life. I live

Seriousl, get a life. I live off of Holly Shelter and I don't live in the "Ghetto" as you apply about people. I work at one of the largest company in Wilmington and very proud of it.I hope when you do have children the mother is the one to raise them and give them values that they can carry with them, they will not get it from you. Your statement about white sheets are so stupid . I live in the south and have all my life. Guess what, I have color and white sheets. This satatement I made is so stupid, just like your comment.

Excuse me get out of the ghetto!!!!!!

My kids and I will be affected by this neighborhood school plan. As you said you do not have kids so keep your comments to yourself because it does not affect you. You have some nerve saying get out of the ghetto. I have a college education and I work two jobs to try to make a better life for my kids. I live where I can afford, which is something I do not have to expalin to you. Your statement get out of the ghetto is exactly the evidence that proves racism still is alive.

"Justice for my kids," Is

"Justice for my kids," Is there any way you can appeal to the board at this point to have your children sent to a different school? Would you be able to drive them? You sound very concerned and I know they let people do this sometimes. You are right in wanting a difference for your children as we all do. I don't know how to solve the problem, but I do know that not all people who want their children to stay in school near their homes aren't racist. I also know some of them even have hearts for all children but honestly think a 45 minute bus ride is too long even if it will support socio-economic diversity. I am one of those people and wish all Wilmington subdivisions were more like the Forest Hills area. They have a great diverse group of students. My daughter's area school is too homogeneous however, I don't have a solution.

So punish the students

So punish the students because of the parents bad choices. Give the children a chance.

what, give them a chance to

what, give them a chance to come to school and act out the way their parents do at home? Give then a chance to come to school and beat up on kids that have more than them? Give them a chance to bring drugs that they probably got from an older sibling or parent? Give them a chance to rub off on kids who otherwise don't know filthy words? Yes, lets give them a chance to pollute our schools. When they don't fell like learning, they can disrupt an otherwise smooth classroom. When they feel like acting like they act in the hood while at school and cuss and whatever else, let them. Lets just give them a chance. You are a do-gooder who doesn't see what the end result is. Lets give the poor kids who show that they want to be different a chance. I'm all for bussing in a few good kids from a poorer school who demonstrate the desire to be different, the desire to learn, and the will to succeed. These are the kids who deserve to go to a better school and who deserve to get out of the hood, because it might hold them back. But to just bus in random kids who don't give a ****, I'm against it. They don't change and the parents don't teach them any different either. They just continue to teach them ways to live of the gov't. I say give any kid a chance if he demonstrates the will to change. And if not let them continue doing what they do.

HMMMM

.SO PUNISH the children because THEIR parents made GOOD choices? THAT makes sense...it's the whole...YOU HAVE TO BE PUNISHED because you did something with your life.

I dont Live in the

I dont Live in the ghetto..for you to even state that word just proves what social thinking you have..I actually work at the biggest company in Wilmington..color of skin has everything to do with this..must have hit a nerve..hummm? Dont hide behind your sheets!! be proud..stand up for segregration!!

Dose of equality

Want equality? Have a dose of it. Start by paying taxes, working a regular job and not taking ANY government assistance. Get scholarships based on your abilities, not your skin color. Also make sure to get rid of 1)naacp, 2)B.E.T, 3)United Negro College Fund, 4)uncle al and 5)uncle jessie, 6)Black Miss America, 7)Black Movie Awards, 8)Black Entertainment Awards, 9)Essence, 10)Ebony & 11)Jet Magazines, 12)National Urban League, 13)National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators and Developers (NABHOOD), 14)National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), 15)National Association of Blacks In Criminal Justice (NABCJ) and 16)National Action Network. The list goes on and on of racist groups only open to black people. Once that is done, come talk about equality.

After reading your comments

After reading your comments it seems you are the one making it about race. Suggesting anyone whose view is different from yours is “hiding behind a sheet” How do you know what ethnicity they are?? They could be the same person you work with, if infact you do work for the biggest company in Wilmington. The school I went to I was a minority, I was made fun of by kids because I dressed nice, my brothers didn’t have their pants around their ankles showing of their underwear. I am sorry my parents worked their behinds off to give me a nice house in a nice neighborhood and nice clothes. My grades were HORRIBLE, I didn’t want to go to school because of all the bantering. When I moved here in the middle of High School and went to a school that everyone in my neighborhood went, Laney, a lot better than the school in PA, I was on Honor Roll until I graduated. Busing is not the answer, it is something that was faught against once before.

Sheets?

Who is hiding behind sheets? You are the one bringing up skin color. Are we supposed to be impressed because you work for the biggest company in Wilmington? Please note I am not. But do tell, how long have you been employed at Wal-Mart?

I grew up in the north. It

I grew up in the north. It plan doesn't work to ship kids around so the schools can be diverse. You go to school were you live. It was not based on race. If you can afford tom live in the area you want your kids to go to school then move and stop complaining. Why drag down all the schools in town? Mixing it up doesn't make it any better. All it does is cost money in a time when there are budget crunches everywhere. I think the person going by EQUALITY is the biggest racist of all with all their postings. No one has mentioned race anywhere except for them!!!

busing

It would be nice if something as simple as busing would solve the problem. But the truth is that it has been proven time and again that it does not. The best school in the world can not become a substitute for parenting.

What has been shown to have some success is school choice programs. Simply put, school choice allows parents to select a private school and send their child to that school at state expense. In Cleveland, many of the programs have made a real difference not only in the lives of the children they serve, but the families as well.

Perhaps that is a course that Wilmington ought to consider. School choice allows parents to select a charter school, a secular school, a Christian school, a Jewish school... The choice is the parents, as it should be.

Forced busing has never worked, but perhaps a real, and well funded, school choice program might.

I'm a Yankee too, and I

I'm a Yankee too, and I totally agree! You go to school in your neighborhood and that's it! I have seen situations where a child in a different neighborhood will get his/her own transportation and go to a school outside of his own neighborhood, but only for serious students who will contribute and he himself be served better by going to another school. Other than that, if it is going to be labeled as segregation as they love to avoid in the south (I guess they have a guilty conscience), then whatever. For years people of the same background have lived in certain neighborhoods (esp. up North) because they identify with eachother. So what is wrong with that? I hate the mentality of people down south wheter it is racial, socio-economic, Yankee vs. rebel!! I mean we should be so far past that. The only reason they focus on de-segregationg is because of the history down here.

so what

Who cares who you work for. What does that have to do with this? But IF you do have a job and don't like the neighborhood or school, MOVE!

Victory for the Old South

Yeah..lets bring out the confederate flags and wave them high..oh and lets not forget to color code the drinking fountains..in other words..long live the South..the school board actually voted for this on the heels of Martin Luther King birthday..a man who wanted diversity for his children as well as yours..we need to stand together and get these small minded people off our school board...can we enlist these people that voted for the neighborhood schools to volunteer at least 1 hour a day at Virgo, Williston and Holly Shelter next year and see what their thoughts will be then..NAACP pppleeaaasseee escalate this to our National Board..I also have some clorox for those white sheets that people are refusing to wear in public..

ISSUES

YOU have DEEPER issues that go WAY beyond ANY DECISION that the school board could have ever made. I have worked hard all my life to make sure my child gets a good education no matter what scool she is at. It really offends me that YOU are using this decision by the Board of Education to STRIKE out at all white people. It is crystal clear that you have issues with the white race and that is not something the Board of Education can fix. You don't mind speaking your mind and giving your opinion but, you don't want to hear anybody elses opinion.

In my experience

In my experience kids that go to school closer to where they live are happier no matter if they are rich, poor, black, white, middle class, hispanic or any other lable you care to use. When you are going to school closer to where you live the logistics are easier for the family. If the child is sick or misses the bus, it is easier to get the child home or to school. Conferences and parent involvment become more managable. Students also feel more comfortable because the location feels a bit more like "home" than another area of the city. No plan is perfect. Our society and schools are not a Utopia. The adopted plan isn't the best, but I think they could have done far worse.

Who's NEXT!!! bring it on!!!

Who's NEXT!!! bring it on!!! I guarantee none of these imposers who claim that the ghetto should stay in the ghetto wont say their remarks on TV..dont want to show your face but always hiding behind an email or I dont know..a sheet???

I'll give you some equality

You forgot about another one

Guesty, you forgot about one of the biggest racist movements ever.... Affirmative Action. The process of hiring and promoting based solely upon skin color. Finally some people are standing up and saying enough. Time to stop giving preferential treatment due to skin color, give preference to those capable of doing the job.

Supreme Court Finds Bias Against White Firefighters

There you go. Yelling for

There you go. Yelling for the NAACP.If you do not get what you want either yell racism or NAACP. You wanting the NAACP involved is racist by itself. You act like a spoiled brat. Get over it.

You forgot about...

It seems everyone has forgot about one group in all of this, the poor white folk living in the dirty rundown trailer getting free lunch. All of you in favor of busing people around have failed to acknowledge this group. I wonder why that is? I suspect that it is really because you don't actually give a darn about the greater good and are only concerned about yourselves.

Im acting like a spoiled

Im acting like a spoiled brat because the separatists in Wilmington dont want to venture past their neighborhoods..what will do you when your child goes to College..go to a neighborhood College too??? Im sure your child will go to college that wont be around the corner or right in your neighborhood..Dont hide behind the phony reason that is on convenience..call it for it really is!!!

...NO

they will be at a college where kids want to better themselves and WORK hard to do it along with the support of their families..NO PROBLEMS THERE...it's the leaches that think they are STUPID just because they can't sit beside someone whos parents makes more money...IF think that your smarts come from how much money your parents make...THEN YOU ARE STUPID...and you deserve to be right where you are.

Stop race baiting!!

Equality, "I also have some clorox for those white sheets that people are refusing to wear in public.."

Are YOU for real? There is NOT ONE THING MENTIONED about race in the WWAY article and YOU bring it up!!!!

Socioeconomic class is being mentioned, NOT race!!! STICK TO THE FACTS....and stop trying to intimidate people with your "white guilt".

So Segregation is not a race

So Segregation is not a race issue?? Really..there are many history books that differ with your statement..just be real about why you REALLY want neighborhood schoools! You can twist this into anything you want but the neighborhood schools is based on SEGREGATION..PERIOD!!! and me intimidate people..you really mean I hit a nerve..

Are

YOU STUPID? Can you read? They wanted to separate schools based on ECONOMICS...not race...all in the name of economic diversity..WHATEVER that is... Unless you ARE saying that minorities are stupid poor people...then your comment would make sense. I happen to believe that just because your poor...doesn't mean you are STUPID. In addition, just because your poor...doesn't mean that your a certain color...unless YOU think otherwise....the problem here is...these three board members, as well as, their parents and supporters...think that if your poor..YOUR STUPID and you can't pull yourself out of poverty unless you go to school A instead of school B. THAT is the REAL SAD part of all of this..the students don't have a chance because those that are SUPPOSED to be supportive...are keeping them down. IF you are brought up being TOLD your stupid and poor...you'll probably grow up to live up to it!

I suppose

the added costs to bus students all around the school district should have no bearing on the decision to support neighborhood schools?

Tell me, where will the funding come from? The Education Lottery? Not likely the way Governors raid it to fill budget deficits.

I suppose the additional time spent on the bus, by students, is better spent on the bus than in study or extra curricular activities?

Tell me, will this cross district busing improve parental involvement in the lives of students whose parents are already lax in attending local PTA meetings and sporting events?

Tell me, will this cross district busing improve the behaviour of youthful miscreants who already are challenged when it comes to leaving weapons home?

Nope, as someone noted earlier, when you don't get your way, pull out the racial card.

How about addressing my questions before you raise that flag again?

So.... we should spend

So.... we should spend millions busing students across the county based SOLELY on race statistics... to Prevent racism???

This is about more than a bus ride......

Be serious! Somebodies child is gona always have to ride the bus. If you dont like it drive yours to school. I think the issue is way bigger than a bus ride. We spend millions of tax dollars doing meaningless other things so why not spend them on education.
