10-year-old sells popcorn to buy Christmas gifts for other kids
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County boy is making a difference in his community one bag of popcorn at a time, with hopes to put smiles on kids faces.
10-year-old Mason Marshall spends hours perfecting every step of popping his unique popcorn. Week after week, Mason is at Lighthouse Gifts near Holden Beach to sell his homemade popcorn. It all started a year ago, when he realized not everyone in the community was as fortunate as he is.
“This side of the bridge has a lot of money, and this side doesn’t really have that much,” Mason says about that area of Brunswick County.
With a little push from his parents he decided to take action.
“So mom gave me 50 bucks and told me to run with it, so i started making this now,” he said.
“He played with a bunch of ideas and finally he said I’m going to make popcorn,” said mom Melissa Marshall. “I said you can make all the popcorn you want, as long as you do something good for this world.”
That’s exactly what he did.
With close to 40 flavors ranging from cinnamon roll to taco, Mason soon sold enough bags to give out Christmas gifts for 20 children in the county last year. It’s only August but Mason has already bought more gifts than he had last year. Though he’ll slow down when school starts, he doesn’t plan to close his business anytime soon.
“I want a little patch of grass and a store called mason’s market juice and cafe,” Mason said.
A likely dream for a kid who is making dreams for others come true.
