12 file to replace Berger, Wolfe on New Hanover Co. Commission

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There will be at least two new members of the New Hanover County Commission this fall, and there are plenty of people interested in the jobs.

Earlier this year Commissioner Tom Wolfe, a Republican, said he would not run to keep his seat. Libertarian Brian Berger, the other incumbent whose term is up, did not file for reelection.

As the filing period ended this afternoon, 10 Republicans and two Democrats signed up to run to fill the two seats.

Democrats Patricia Spear and Rob Zapple automatically advance to November’s general election.

The crowded Republican field will have to be whittled down in a primary May 6. Republican candidates include Dave Conklin, John Dismukes, Derrick Hickey, Chuck Kays, Charles Kuebler, Ricky Meeks, Frank Roberts, Hank Thomas, Campbell Dodd and Skip Watkins.

The new commission may also have to fill another seat after the election if either Democrat Jonathan Barfield or Republican Woody White winds up winning the 7th District seat in the US House of Representatives.

Hickey’s decision to run for county commission means an opening on the New Hanover County School Board, where his four-year term expires this fall.
