CLEVELAND, OH (AP) – Kyrie Irving scored 29 points, Anderson Varejao had a career-high 23 rebounds and the Cleveland Cavaliers opened the season with a 94-84 victory over the short-handed Washington Wizards on Tuesday night in the first game on the NBA schedule.

Rookie Dion Waiters added 17 points for the Cavs, who led by 16 in the third quarter but needed big plays from Irving and Varejao in the final minutes to hold off the Wizards. Varejao had a career-high nine assists, two setting up dunks by Tristan Thompson in the last two minutes.

Jordan Crawford scored 11 points to lead the Wizards, who were without star point guard John Wall, power forward Nene and forward Kevin Seraphin. Wall, the former No. 1 overall pick, is expected to be out until late November with a knee injury.

MIAMI, FL (AP) – LeBron James scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while missing much of the second half with leg cramps, Dwyane Wade scored 29 points and the NBA champion Miami Heat beat the Boston Celtics 120-107 on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

Ray Allen, in his first game with Miami since leaving Boston over the summer, added 19 points for the Heat, as did Chris Bosh. Miami handed out its championship rings and raised the banner commemorating last season in a pregame ceremony replete with an indoor fireworks show.

Paul Pierce scored 23 points, Rajon Rondo finished with 20 points and 13 assists, and Leandro Barbosa scored 16 for Boston.

LOS ANGELES, CA (AP) – Darren Collison scored 17 points, Brandan Wright added 14, and the Dallas Mavericks spoiled the Lakers debuts of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash with a 99-91 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

O.J. Mayo had 12 points as the revamped Mavericks pulled off a stunner in their opener, comfortably beating the star-studded Lakers without any help from injured Dirk Nowitzki.

Kobe Bryant scored 22 points while playing on an injured right foot, but the Lakers opened a season of enormous expectations with a major dud of a performance.

Howard had 19 points and 10 rebounds while missing 11 of his 14 free throws before fouling out with 2:02 to play. Nash managed just seven points and four assists with seemingly little to do in the Lakers’ new offensive scheme.

Wilmington, NC (Hammerheads) -– Two Wilmington Hammerheads players have officially signed to play in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) for the 2012-2013 season. The Rochester Lancers formally welcomed defender Troy Cole to their player roster over the weekend while his Hammerheads teammate, goalkeeper Troy Hernandez, also signed to play in the indoor league professionally with the Baltimore Blast.

Troy Cole began preseason training with the Lancers during the month of October and will make his MISL debut in the approaching season. “I’ve played in the USL for three years now,” said Cole. “MISL is a great opportunity to improve my skills and to stay fit during the USL offseason. I’m a rookie in the indoor sense and my goal is to not only make a difference on this team, but to also make a name for myself in this league.”

Prior to playing with the Hammerheads, Cole played for FC New York (USL PRO), the Atlanta Blackhawks (PDL), and AC St. Louis (USSF Division II). Cole had a successful debut season with the Hammerheads going to the 2012 USL PRO Championship back in September.

“It has been an awesome transition moving from one great organization to another,” expressed Cole. “I hope to win another league title with my indoor team just as I did with the Hammerheads.”

The Rochester Lancers will kick off their season against the Syracuse Silver Knights in Syracuse on Saturday, November 3, 2012.

Meanwhile, south of Rochester, the Baltimore Blast selected Hammerheads goalkeeper Troy Hernandez to join the squad for the 2012-2013 MISL season. The Blast has cemented its spot in Baltimore sports history and the league by capturing six MISL championships since it first made its mark in the city in 1980.

Hernandez made his USL PRO debut with the Hammerheads during the 2012 regular season. He faced a minor setback in preseason when he had to undergo surgery due to a bone chip in his hand and was not able to get back on the field until May.

Hernandez stepped into the USL PRO spotlight during the Hammerheads 2012 playoff run versus the Richmond Kickers in the quarterfinals, followed by the Orlando City Lions in the semifinals. His outstanding performance helped lead the Hammerheads to the title of 2012 USL PRO Finalists and the championship match in Charleston.

The Baltimore Blast will kick off their season at home against the Chicago Soul on Saturday, November 3, 2012.
