FIRST ON 3: Former Bald Head officers file federal lawsuit

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Four former public safety officers with the Village of Bald Head Island have filed a suit against the village, Village Manager Calvin Peck and Director of Public Safety Caroline Mitchell.

In the suit filed on Wednesday, Thomas Cannon, Jesse Conner, Donald Koons and Nicholas Terrell allege they were wrongfully terminated by the Peck and Mitchell on August 28, 2014. The suit said the reasons for the firings included allegations of harassment, sexual harassment, discourteous treatment of other employees and inappropriate electronic communications. Some of the allegations stemmed from a series of group text messages that included other officers who were reprimanded but not terminated. The suit said the allegations were false and they were not granted an appeal or due process of the termination. The suit also alleges the village released the information on the terminations, which affected their reputations.

The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory damages, awarded money for court and attorney fees and to be reinstated to their positions at BHI.

This is the second federal suit filed in regards to the incident. A fifth terminated employee has a pending suit as well.
