Police: Lumberton officer shot after ‘accidental weapon discharge’

Police were dispatched to a shooting Friday night at the intersection of Peterson Road and Fayetteville Road in Lumberton near Peterson Toyota, according to officials on scene.

Capt. Terry Parker with Lumberton Police said there was “an accidental weapon discharge resulting in a Lumberton Police Department Officer being shot.”

He said the injured officer was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and the officer’s injury does not appear to be life-threatening.

“The officer is fine and is recovering,” Lumberton Mayor Pro Tem John Cantey said. “Will have a few more procedures but is doing well at this time.”

Parker said the North Carolina State Police are investigating.

The shooting happened at 5:13 p.m. and the officer was airlifted to the hospital.

Viewers tell ABC15 police had blocked the road.

Police have not released any information about which officer was shot.
