WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UPDATE: The planning commission approved the changes 4-1 and it will go before the Wilmington City Council.
It’s a busy night at Wilmington City Hall.
Right after Mayor Bill Saffo’s State of the City address, the Planning Commission is holding a meeting. The debate over short-term housing will continue at that meeting.
One of the other hot button topics is a proposal that would make it easier for developers to build structures as tall as currently allowed by the city.
Former mayor Harper Peterson is fighting an amendment to the city land development code.
The city wants to allow properties deemed urban mixed use to construct buildings up to 75 feet tall without a special use permit. Currently, the maximum height for a building without one of these permits is 45 feet.
Peterson says the special use permitting process is an important tool the city has for development.
“I don’t think we need it. I think the SUP (special use permit) is the proper path, the proper course. That will ensure the public that the city is moving ahead correctly and working with developers and not letting developers take advantage of the public interest, the public health,” said Peterson.
Peterson is concerned with one planned development in particular, a 44 acre retail and luxury housing complex called The Avenue. It is slated to be off of Military Cutoff Road near the Country Club of Landfall.
The former mayor is prepared to voice his concerns when that agenda item comes up at the meeting. He expects some residents in the area near where The Avenue is planned to come and make their voices heard as well.
