WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The UNCW men’s basketball team will host Stanford of the Pac-12 this fall. It’s the first game of a home-and-home series with the Cardinal over the next two seasons.
The Seahawks will host Stanford at Trask Coliseum on Nov. 9. UNCW will then head west for a rematch in Palo Alto, CA, during the 2019-2020 season.
“We’re excited about starting a home-and-home series with Stanford,” UNCW coach C.B. McGrath said in a news release. “They have an outstanding basketball program and are annually one of the top programs in America.”
McGrath and Stanford coach Jerod Haase, who recently completed his second season with the Cardinal, played together at Kansas for three years (1994-97) and worked together under Roy Williams at North Carolina for nine seasons.
This fall’s game will be the first meeting between the Seahawks and Cardinal. UNCW has played only four opponents from the Pac-12 Conference and stands 2-4 against the league.
The game will be UNCW’s first vs the Pac-12 since the Seahawks clipped Colorado, 67-55, on November 29, 2006, at Trask Coliseum.
Stanford finished the 2017-18 season at 19-16 overall with 11 wins in the Pac-12. The Cardinal earned an invitation to the NIT and advanced to the second round before falling at Oklahoma State.
Overall, the Cardinal have appeared in 17 NCAA Tournaments, including a national championship in 1942, and made nine NIT appearances.
