One person dead after major accident this morning


The Surf City Police Department responded to a car accident on NC Highway 50 Saturday around 9:30 a.m. that resulted in the death of one of the drivers.

Surf City Police identified the victim as Robin Blankenship. Police say Blankenship was traveling west on NC Highway 50 when a car traveling eastbound crossed over and collided head on with Blankenship.

Police identified the other driver as Travis Luckinbill.

Blankenship was pronounced dead at the scene. Blankenship’s two-year-old son sustained critical injuries and was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The condition of the two-year-old is still unknown.

Luckinbill and the passenger in his car were also transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Their conditions are also unknown.

Charges are pending against Luckinbill and the investigation is ongoing.
