WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Thousands have signed a petition to change the name of Hugh MacRae Park, saying it bears the name of a man with a racist legacy.
The park, near the intersection of College and Oleander, was named for Hugh MacRae. MacRae was a Wilmington man who was one of the leaders of the 1898 Wilmington massacre.
The insurrection or coup consisted of white residents overthrowing the local government, killing dozens of black people in the process.
Sonya Patrick, organizer for Black Lives Matter Wilmington reacted to the petition Monday.
“I definitely think the name should be changed. I think it’s sick that we live in a city that has a park named after a co-conspirator of a massacre that killed innocent black citizens,” Patrick said. “The county has spent a quarter of a million dollars maintaining that park and not one dime to the descendants of the victims.”
