3 N.C.-based teams claim spots in NCAA tournament
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Three North Carolina-based schools are headed to the NCAA tournament.
North Carolina drew a Number One seed for a record 11th time and joined Duke and Davidson in the field of 65 teams.
North Carolina will play 16th-seeded Eastern Kentucky in the first round Thursday in Winston-Salem. The winner will face either eighth-seeded Marquette or ninth-seeded Michigan State on Saturday.
Duke is the Number 6 seed in the West regional, while Davidson is seeded 13th in the Midwest. The Blue Devils play eleventh-seeded Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday in Buffalo, New York.
Davidson plays fourth-seeded Maryland in Buffalo, New York, on Thursday.
Among the state's bubble teams left out were North Carolina State and Appalachian State.
Both the Wolfpack and Mountaineers were selected to the 32-team National Invitation Tournament. Sixth-seeded NC State plays at third seed Drexel on Tuesday and the fifth-seeded Mountaineers play at fourth-seeded Mississippi on Wednesday.
