Boiling Spring Lakes commissioner criticized for support of police department expansion

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Boiling Spring Lakes commissioner is being called out for his pursuit of a new facility to house the police department.

City officials said there’s been mixed feelings about a new police station and it’s getting personal for one commissioner.

Boiling Spring Lakes commissioner David Putnam sent WWAY a photo of a sign that was posted on top of the Banana Boat Landing ice cream shop’s sign in Boiling Spring Lakes. It said ‘David Putnam says tear down police department’. It also has some dollar signs around the words.

But Putnam said the police station isn’t really functional anymore because it’s small and there are some much needed upgrades.

He adds that he feels it is right to support the police department’s expansion.

“Well a lot of times when you’re in these positions you’ve got to have thick skin. A friend of mine called me up and told me about it and you know I snickered, you know everyone has a right to express what they got to say,” said Putnam.

Putnam said the sign has actually drawn more attention to the police station expansion discussion. He said most of the calls he has been getting about the expansion are positive.

We called and reached out on social media to the owner of the business where the sign was hung-up. We are still waiting for a response from them.

The city commissioners will look at this project again at their next public meeting April 6.
