Beach reconstruction continues on Kure and Carolina Beaches

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — You might notice a lot of activity on Kure and Carolina beaches, that’s because the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are continuing their storm damage reduction project.

They tell WWAY the two projects will cost more than $12 million to dredge sand to the beaches. Engineer Shannon Geoly said the projects are done every three years to ensure safety of the infrastructure along the beach.

“We’re building the sand up to a certain point, which is to keep the wave action as far offshore as we can, to minimize damage,” Geoly said.

The engineers want to warn the public to stay away from the work areas and to stay off of the pipes on the beach.
