SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A large alligator found partially in a roadway in Sunset Beach has been safely relocated to a nearby pond, according to the Sunset Beach Police Department.

Police say Officer Gage discovered the female alligator, measuring approximately 7 feet, 2.5 inches long, lying partially in the roadway along Lake Shore Drive.

Following an assessment and standard safety procedures, Capt. Gray relocated the alligator to a nearby pond.

According to the department, Gray is licensed through the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and is trained and certified to handle and remove nuisance alligators.

When do police relocate alligators?

The Sunset Beach Police Department says officers do not remove alligators simply because they are spotted in residential neighborhoods.

However, relocation may be necessary when an alligator poses a potential risk to public safety or its own well-being.

Alligators are protected under North Carolina law, and residents are urged to use caution around the animals.

Police share alligator safety reminders

The department offered several reminders for residents who encounter alligators:

  • Never approach or attempt to handle an alligator.
  • Keep children and pets away from the water’s edge.
  • Never feed alligators, which is illegal and dangerous.
  • Remember that alligators can move quickly over short distances and react rapidly when threatened.

Anyone who spots an alligator posing a potential threat to people or itself is encouraged to contact the Sunset Beach Police Department at 910-579-6297.

For emergencies, residents should call 911.
