911 calls released after body found in Greenfield Lake

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As police await autopsy results on a missing man whose body was found in Greenfield Lake over the weekend, we’re getting a listen to 911 calls from the scene.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office said the man, identified as 28-year-old Justin Hunter Stroupe, had been missing for four days when his body was found Sunday morning.

Stroupe’s body was found in the lake, near East Lake Shore Drive and Yaupon Drive.

In the 911 calls, a woman, who said she was visiting the area from out of town, describes what she and others saw when they stumbled upon the scene that morning.

“Hey. Hey, I think we have a dead body on the top of — what is this lake? Greenfield Lake at Cypress Apartments, Cypress Grove Apartments,” the 911 caller said.

“Yeah, it’s got hands. It’s dead. It’s a body,” the 911 caller said.

The StarNews reports the sheriff’s office is not aware of Stroupe having any cognitive or medical issues, nor a history of disappearing.

The death investigation is being conducted by the Wilmington Police Department.

Police are waiting on autopsy results to determine whether or not foul play was involved.
