State title game awaits winner of Friday’s Hoggard-New Bern showdown
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Hoggard Vikings will hit the road on Friday to face the New Bern Bears in the eastern title game for 4-A football. Both teams enter the game undefeated. The winner will advance to the state finals on Friday, December 12.
2014 has been a sensational season for the Hoggard Vikings, but the season will come to a crashing halt if the Vikings don’t take care of business in the biggest game of the season. New Bern, the opponent is not only undefeated, the Bears have only been tested twice this year. “We actually scrimmaged New Bern in the preseason, senior linebacker Julius Reynolds said. “It’s kinda like destiny to play them again in the eastern finals. To scrimmage against a team that good before the season and then to play them again in the eastern finals is really special as a Hoggard Viking.”
Veteran head coach Scott Braswell is awfully familiar with New Bern. After all, the schools were in the same conference from 2009-2012. “Just like Scotland, New Bern is an athletic team,” Braswell told us. “They do a great job with schemes getting their athletes in out in space, it will be a challenge for us
New Bern head coach Bobby Curlings respects Hoggard. That will show this week in his team’s preparation for the Vikings. “Coach Braswell is one of the best in the state. He always has his team prepared. They’ll have a few wrinkles that we haven’t seen. We have our hands full.”
