Bodies, debris found in search for missing AirAsia jet
PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia (AP/ABC) — Wreckage spotted floating in Indonesian waters belongs to the missing AirAsia jetliner that crashed into the Java Sea Sunday with 162 people aboard, according to airline officials.
Several bodies were found early today about 100 miles from land and 6 miles from Flight 8501’s last known coordinates, more than two days of searching for the missing jet.
The Naval Aviation Center commander at the Surabaya air force base says the bodies pulled from the water, which were taken to an Indonesian navy ship, were not wearing life jackets. The discovery comes after several pieces of red, white and black debris were spotted in the Java Sea near Borneo island.
The plane vanished on its way from Indonesia to Singapore when it encountered rough weather. The pilot was waiting for permission to increase altitude when contact was lost.
