Fight to save UNCW’s track & field continues

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s been over a month since UNCW has cut the track and field program for next year, but students and supporters say they are not giving up.

This afternoon weather conditions were less than ideal for the outdoor rally on campus to fight against the University’s recent decision.

Tatyana Brewton is a senior at UNCW and she said, “Everyone is out here getting wet, but that’s okay because we are doing this because we love it and we really care about this sport, but obviously the athletic department does not.”

Motivational speeches from those on the team, signs, and chanting were heard across campus all in hopes to get more people on their side.

Other members of the track and field team say if officials don’t reconsider their decision, they will have to reconsider another school.

Another member on the team, Jaime Mongola said, “They are at this campus to participate in the track and field program and a lot of people are considering transferring to another school.”

Supporters plan to meet with UNCW officials Tuesday afternoon hoping they will re-evaluate their decision.
