State wants input on online license renewal

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — How would you like to renew your driver’s license without having to go to the DMV? The state wants your input on the idea.

The NC Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing later this month on a proposal to create an online system to let you renew your license remotely. The DOT is also accepting written public input on the idea.

In its appropriation bill adopted last year, the General Assembly allowed the DMV to implement the system to help reduce customer wait times and provide customers with more convenient alternatives to in-office services. By law, though, the DMV must go through a public input process to adopt the rule to implement the system. The plan would also not require a written test, road sign test or road test for remote renewals and would allow drivers to use a photo already on file with the DMV.

It’s estimated it will cost the state about $475,000 to set up the remote renewal system. But the DOT believes it would save customers millions of dollars a year in the value of time saved.

If you’d like to sound off on the plan, you can attend a public hearing Jan. 27 in Raleigh, or you can submit your feedback in writing through Feb. 13. Click here for more information on both options.
