ONLY ON 3: More details from family of escaped inmate
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As the search for a missing inmate continues, we are hearing more from the mother and brother of that man.
The family of William Hewett say they don’t think his brother Curtis, who was also in jail, willingly helped him escape.
We spoke with family, friends, and Curtis about the situation. Curtis continues to sit behind bars tonight in place of William after allegedly helping him escape. Curtis had a message for his brother William is who still on the run.
“He needs to get his *** back here and quit doing me like this,” Curtis Hewett said.
It’s now been 5 days since William successfully escaped the Brunswick County Detention Center.
“He walked right out of the jail, he didn’t run, he didn’t escape, they let him out,” Kathy Carter said.
Carter is William and Curtis Hewett’s mother
“William was in a little trouble when he was young, but people don’t understand him,” Carter said. “He’s a good boy too. He has a good heart.”
Sheriff John Ingram says William is a member of the Folk Nation gang.
Carter explained her sons are very different from each other in both appearance and their criminal past. She said this was Curtis’s first offense.
“It breaks my heart because Curtis doesn’t deserve this,” Carter said.
We asked the family why did Curtis allegedly help his brother escape, his mother denies he did it willingly.
“I don’t think Curtis worked with him,” Carter said. “Curtis is not that type of person. Why would Curtis want to stay there and let somebody else out regardless of who they are?”
The family attorney said they could not talk about William’s escape. Carter said the only reason she could think of why William wanted to leave was because of his grandmother’s health.
“He knew that; he’d been calling and asking about her and trying to talk to her, but she can’t speak,” Carter said. “He just wanted to tell her he loved her.”
Now the family is working together to figure out why he left and the deputies are trying to figure out where William is headed.
A reward leading to Hewett’s capture has been upped to $2,500.
