NC protests continue next week in Raleigh in run-up to march

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Protesters of policies backed by the North Carolina General Assembly and Gov. Pat McCrory will have a frequent presence in Raleigh leading up to a yearly march promoting what organizers call a “moral” agenda.

The Rev. William Barber of the state NAACP talked Thursday about the run-up to the ninth annual rally Feb. 14 in downtown Raleigh. This year’s “Moral March for Love and Justice” calls on Republican state officials to repeal policies they say in part harm the poor and erode voting rights.

Barber says groups will walk through the Legislative Building daily next Monday through Thursday and participate in non-violent protest. About 1,000 people were arrested over the past two years during similar protests within the building. Another event to support Medicaid expansion is set for Feb. 16.
