City adopting 10-year plan to end homelessness

WILMINGTON — Several major cities already use what’s called a “ten-year plan” to end chronic homelessness. Now Wilmington is doing the same thing.

A committee appointed by Mayor Bill Saffo has come up with a first draft of the plan.
It calls for extending what is currently taking place in the City.

Right now, when a homeless person is picked up by police or taken to the hospital, they’re often put back on the streets or taken to a temporary shelter.

In one part of the plan, the city would provide support services and permanent housing.

Steering committee Co-chair Spiro Macris said, “We’re talking about possibly building new housing, or buying old houses renovating them, buying apartment buildings, renovating them.”
