Sunscreen could get new label
A new label for sunscreen bottles could be on the way.
The new label would have two ratings, one for UVA rays and another for UVB.
Right now labels only indicate the amount of UVB protection. That’s what the SPF number indicates.
The new label will continue to use an SPF rating for UVB rays and will add a four-star rating for UVA rays. The more stars, the better the protection.
The new label will allow consumers to make a more informed decision about how to properly protect their skin.
Dermatologist Dr. Jonathan Crane said, “When you look at sunscreens now, this is 60 so we know it’s providing very good UVB protection. But as far as the UVA protection, you really don’t know.”
Dr. Crane also recommends looking for sunscreens that contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
Those ingredients will not break down over time and will provide better skin protection.
