Controversial display has people talking at UNCW
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A display using graphic photos has been creating controversy on the campus of UNCW. The display pairs images of genocide with images of aborted fetuses.
Supporters said it helps educate people on the consequences of abortion. Protesters also gathered to express their belief in freedom of choice.
The display was set up at one of the most traveled areas of the campus. Organizers said they were hoping to get the message out to anyone who would listen.
“The unborn is a human being and that abortion is an act of violence. And we’re using the pictures to show that truth,” said Maggie Egger with the Center for Bioethical Reform.
Student protesters said the display was inappropriate.
“We wanted to come out here today and just spread positivity. It’s not even a ‘pro choice’ or ‘pro life’ thing at this point,” said Mikaela Fleming, who was out in opposition of the images. “We don’t want people to look at these images and be distracted and be hurt.”
Discussions between both sides continued throughout the day. The event was brought to campus by Ratio Christi and College Republicans at UNCW. Both the Genocide Awareness Project and those protesting the display say they will be out on campus for the rest of the week.
