Kitchen fire kills pets, destroys home

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Fire investigators say unattended cooking is the cause of a house fire that killed several cats.

They say it happened just before midnight on the 100 block of Northern Blvd. Fire crews say all of the residents got out of the fire OK, but firefighters removed several cats from the home that died.

Firefighters say the home is a total loss with damage to the building estimated at $150,000 and contents estimated at $50,000.

The American Red Cross is assisting with the replacement of the occupants.
