FIRST ON 3: Montey Murray guilty in child murder

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — In about three weeks, Montey Murray was found guilty of killing his ex-girlfriend’s son.

Murray was found guilty of first degree murder and other charges in the beating death of Jaronn McAllister, 3. Murray dropped off the child at a hospital before leading authorities on a chase in early 2012. Murray was convicted on charges including first degree murder, felony child abuse, flee to elude arrest and assault with a deadly weapon.

In closing arguments, prosecutor Lee Bollinger focused his case on Murray’s behavior after Jaronn became unresponsive and had to be taken to the hospital. Bollinger says he didn’t act like an innocent man.

“His cell phone worked and he did not call 911,” Bollinger said. “Why not? If you’re a parent of a child and you need emergency medical assistance right now, you call 911 unless you have something to hide.”

He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Murray’s attorney, James Payne, put in a request for an appeal.
