Deputies investigate after student beaten, burned at Laney

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a student was beaten and burned in a fight with another student yesterday afternoon.

Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer says the fight was over drugs and happened some time between about 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. at or near Laney High School.

Brewer says the 17-year-old girl may have been hit by some sort of weapon and burned with what appears to be a cigarette lighter. The victim also claims the girl who attacked her pointed a handgun at her and threatened her.

There’s no word on the victim’s condition. The suspect has not yet been arrested.
