UNC medical school considering branch campus in Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — The University of North Carolina School of Medicine is exploring the possibility of establishing a branch campus in Wilmington in collaboration with New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The hospital has teaching faculty in place and has already been hosting medical students from UNC on a rotating basis for decades, said Joseph Pino, vice president of graduate medical education at NHRMC and president/CEO of South East Area Health Education Center (SEAHEC).
The proposed branch of the school of medicine would train students in Wilmington for a whole year, instead of just several weeks at a time for various rotations. Similar branches already exist in Asheville and Charlotte.
