Annual silent ride in memory of cyclists killed on the road

WILMINGTON,  NC (WWAY) — The annual ‘Ride of Silence’ happened all around the world Wednesday night, including right here in the Cape Fear.

Cyclists got together to take a silent 11 mile ride around Wilmington to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured this year while riding on the roads.
All of the cyclists had to wear a helmet during the entire trip.

Cyclists said regardless of whether they have lost anyone close to them due to cycling, this is still a very important ride.

“It’s unfortunate,” said Duncan McCabe, a cyclist.  “It’s very shameful that people get killed while they are riding, but it’s a fact of life. So, this is a chance to just bring that home.”

The ride of silence is held on the third Wednesday of every May, which is national bike month.
