River Road crack not caused by sinkhole

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A City of Wilmington spokeswoman said crews have determined the cracks forming on a busy road were not caused by a sinkhole.

City officials decided to close parts of River Road on Wednesday evening. It was reopened Friday morning. The road was closed after crews noticed cracks forming on the road. On Thursday the spokeswoman said after crews assessed the area and tested the soil, they found no hole underneath the road. They say the setting sandy soil caused the cracking.

The spokeswoman said any long-term repairs will be discussed after the technical assessment has been completed.
