Day after senate veto override vote, governor dodges reporters
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Gov. Pat McCrory dodged questions from reporters after events in Wilmington and Raleigh today a day after the Senate voted to override McCrory’s veto on a controversial bill on gay marriage in the state.
McCrory vetoed a bill passed in the General Assembly last week that would have given some court officials the option to refuse to carry out same-sex marriage duties based on religious objections. The state Senate quickly voted to override that veto last night. There has been no decision from the House.
At a groundbreaking for a new facility at the Port of Wilmington, McCrory did speak on the need for a transportation bond. After those remarks at the podium, McCrory spoke briefly to some people in the audience before leaving the port. At an event in Raleigh this morning, McCrory also left without taking questions from members of the media.
At the port, officials said the governor was heading back to Raleigh. According to the governor’s public schedule, he was due back in the area at 6:15 p.m. for another event that started at 5:30 p.m.
Monday evening, McCrory spokesman Josh Ellis said the governor was not avoiding questions, but had to move on to the next stop on his schedule. Ellis said McCrory made his position on SB2 clear when he announced last week his plans to veto it.
