Duke Lemur Center introduces twin baby lemurs

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — The Duke University Lemur Center has announced the birth of twin baby lemurs with the help of King Julien XIII, the animated character from “Madagascar” film series.

Multiple news outlets report the Center announced the birth of twin girls Wednesday in a video featuring the character. Both babies are named Princess Julien.

The baby ring-tailed lemurs were actually born on May 4, but the birth was announced after a month of careful monitoring. Officials say both lemurs were only about 4 inches long at birth.

The two are now healthy and clinging tightly to their mom, Sophia.

The births of the lemur babies are an important step for the world’s critically endangered lemur population. The Duke Lemur Center is the world’s largest and most diverse collection of lemurs outside Madagascar.
