Judge: Man charged with IS support to be held indefinitely

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) — A federal judge has ordered the indefinite detention of a 19-year-old North Carolina man accused of plotting a series of American deaths to show his support for the Middle East group calling itself the Islamic State.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Dennis Howell on Thursday ordered Justin Nojan Sullivan held without bond after deciding prosecutors showed probable cause to continue the case. The Morganton teen faces charges including attempting to provide material support to Islamic State.

Sullivan’s attorney did not contest his continuing detention.

Prosecutors have said Sullivan planned to buy a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle at a June 20 gun show in Hickory and then kill United States citizens. He was arrested the day before the gun show.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that Sullivan is being held at Madison County’s jail.
