Spieth misses out on British playoff, Grand Slam try
ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND (WWAY) — A major accomplishment in golf history remains elusive.
It will be at least another year until a player in the game’s modern era wins the Grand Slam after Jordan Spieth fell just short of the Open Championship in St. Andrews, Scotland.
Spieth was tied for the lead at the Open with Zach Johnson and Marc Leishman as he headed to the 17th hole, but bogeyed to fall one stroke behind. He needed a birdie on 18 to join the playoff field, but just missed the hole on his third shot. Spieth wound up with a par four on the hole to finish the final round at -3 and -14 for the championship. Johnson, Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen advanced to a four-hole playoff.
Spieth, who turns 22 next week, won the Masters and US Open earlier this year. Wins in the British Open and PGA Championship would have made him the first golfer in the modern era to win all four majors in the same calendar year.
Only the legendary Bobby Jones has won a Grand Slam, having won the US Open, US Amateur, British Open and British Amateur in 1930 four years before the Masters began.
