Closing arguments completed in challenge to NC voter law

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — The fate of North Carolina’s new election law rests in the hands of a federal judge after three weeks of testimony and an extended round of closing arguments.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder isn’t expected to make a decision on the case for at least a month.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports Friday’s closing arguments were expected to last three hours, but lasted nearly five hours because of Schroeder’s questions for attorneys for both sides.

Schroeder interrupted attorney Daniel Donovan several times during his remarks, saying that if he were to rule in their favor, he would need to know how to fix the issue and find out if the solution was enough.

The judge also asked state’s attorney Thomas Farr about the justification for changing the election law.
