Sea turtle death at NC national seashore being investigated
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Federal authorities are investigating the possibility that a person deliberately attacked an endangered loggerhead sea turtle that died after being found injured at a North Carolina national park.
The turtle was found with a gaping hole in its head by a park ranger at the Cape Lookout National Seashore in late July. North Carolina State University veterinarians treated the 70-pound turtle for three days before it was euthanized on July 29.
The Costal Conservation Association released a press release Friday that said researchers determined post-mortem that a person caused the blunt force trauma to the turtle’s head.
The association said a $7,500 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest of anyone connected with the attack.
In Oak Island, there have been recent reports of vandalism of turtle nests in the area.
