Tall Ship El Galeon to arrive around sunset Friday
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Spanish Tall Ship reproduction of a 16th Century boat is coming to the Wilmington area, but weather forced the crew to delay the arrival.
The El Galeon is a 167-foot ship that is a replica galleon ship. It’s scheduled to be in the area and available for tours from Saturday, August 15 to Sunday, August 23. The ship was originally set to arrive Thursday, with tours beginning Friday. There hasn’t been a specific time of the ship’s new arrival, but a spokesman said it will be in the afternoon hours Saturday. He also said any ticket purchases for Friday will be honored on other days the ship is in the Port City Marina.
The ship is an authentic replica of a ship that traveled the coasts of Florida 500 years ago. According to a news release, the ship carried 800 colonists and supplies to St. Augustine, establishing the first permanent European settlement in 1565.
The El Galeon is traveling down the Atlantic coast for similar tours. The next stop is Charleston before the ship heads down to St. Augustine.

Tour hours are 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tour only tickets are available at the ship or on the web at www.wilmingtondocks.com. Adults are $10 and youth 12 and under are $5.
