Work to improve Riverfront Park beginning soon

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Work to improve Riverfront Park will start later this month, but tonight the City of Wilmington held a public forum to explain the work that will be done near the Federal Courthouse.

Phase 1 of the project focuses on the section of Water Street between Market and Princess streets.

People had the chance to ask questions and offer suggestions while city staff explained why this project is needed.

“We’ve got a failing bulkhead down there that we need to repair, and along with that we are going to be upgrading the water and sewer down there and our storm water infrastructure,” Deputy City Manager Richard King said. “We’ve got some issues down there with that. And then we want to beautify the area once we dig it all up and tear it all up.”

The portion of Water Street stretching from Princess to Market streets will be closed to cars, however they hope to keep the area open to pedestrians.

Phase 1 of the project will take about a year to finish.

An on-site information meeting will be held Wednesday 10-11 a.m. on the steps of the Federal Courthouse on Water Street.
