Laney volleyball player organizes breast cancer fundraiser

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A local teen is serving up some breast cancer awareness. Laney High School senior Haleigh Somberg put on a fundraiser for the Pretty in Pink Foundation Thursday night called “Dig for a Cure – Play for a Cause”.

Somberg and the rest of her volleyball team were raffling off donated items at their big match against rival Topsail High School.

Somberg said this cause is especially close to her heart.

“Actually my grandma had breast cancer twice and they were kind of the ones that were there for her, and so it kind of inspired me to do this,” said Somberg. “I approached my coach at the beginning of the season, and asked him if this is something I can take on, and it’s just been a good experience.”

Somberg said she got local businesses to sponsor and donate items to raffle. She said it was a true community effort.

More than $2,000 was raised for the foundation.
