Surf City residents react to a wet weekend at the beach


SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The rain subsided a bit today, but not everyone is out of the woods just yet. Storm debris and standing water mean some folks are literally picking up the pieces after the rain.

Throughout Pender County conditions ranged from some minor ponding on the sides of the road to some streets totally submerged in water. In Surf City, folks said they felt the conditions today were a dramatic improvement from yesterday.

Near the Surf City Pier, the surf is still pretty rough and there is a lot of debris in the water. One woman WWAY spoke with even said she saw an entire staircase wash by yesterday.

Throughout the weekend some brave adventurers went out into the elements to experience the storm first hand.

“I’be been taking pictures of the ocean as it progresses through the storm to keep my friends and family that live in different areas updated on what’s going on,” said Surf City resident Patsy Carey.

Others decided to stay inside and play it safe.

“A lot of TV watching. Not venturing out a whole lot knowing that the circumstances of the roads, knowing that they’re flooded,” said Vance Penny of Surf City.

The folks over at the Pier told WWAY that although today might not have been a good day for swimming or surfing, it was ideal fishing weather.
