Surf City leaders approve zoning for biggest housing development

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The largest housing development for the Town of Surf City could soon be on its way.

Town leaders just passed a re-zoning proposal for a housing development proposal of more than 3,400 new homes.  The town’s iconic swing bridge brings vacationers in and out every year.

“We really love it here,” Mia’s Market Co-owner Sandi Lowry said.

Surf City’s charm convinced Lowry to stay.

“We really consider this home,” Lowry said.

Soon, this could be home for thousands of others, because Town Manager Larry Bergman said housing developers have proposed to turn 240 acres from Belt Road to J. H. Batts Road into multiple neighborhoods.

“Their vision is to have you can see on the map different areas for different types of residential and then some commercial,” Bergman said.

Lowry said more homes means more business.

“We think it’s going to be good for the town and good for business,” Lowry said.

She said she is even more excited about a proposed red light at J. H. Batts Road.

“In the summer, the traffic is horrendous,” Lowry said. “If you get someone kind enough to let you make a turn out of here you are thanking your lucky stars.”

The proposal also extends J.H. Batts Road into the development. Lowry said there are some concerns though.

“There is still a lot that needs to take place with proper schooling, make sure that we have the right amount of classrooms,” Lowry said.

The town has received one complaint so far.

“A few people that are property owners nearby worry that development here might impact oyster beds or something like that,” Bergman said.

He said they are only in the early stages though. More planning, public hearings, and time are all still factors for the biggest single housing development in surf city history.

“Aside from that, we’re excited,” Lowry said.

Excitement about growth that will bring more places for more people to call Surf City home.

Bergman said there is not a timeline on this project yet.
